Things went catastrophically wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a spoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the impact of this epic fail.

This problem has spiraled out of control. It's a total catastrophe. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're doomed. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
This is So Bad, It's Funny (Not Really)
Sometimes you stumble upon situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to understand the sheer magnitude of unadulterated absurdity and just gives up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping mechanism.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really actually that amusing. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you felt morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
Ultimately, you are left with a sense of confusion. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just living in a simulation gone wrong?
Tragedy of Epic Proportions
The volcanic eruption struck suddenly, consuming entire cities in its sweep. Buildings collapsed like house of cards, and the roar that ensued was deafening. Thousands were trapped beneath debris, their fate precarious. The scale of the disaster was unprecedented, rendering survivors to confront a future forever changed.

Worst Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case Very bad of bedhead hair. I couldn't figure it to look decent. As I was running out the door, I fell and with a thud all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for work.
I arrived. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was absolutely horrendous. turned sour. I couldn'tconcentrate.
By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
